Jose Isabel “Chabelo” Guevara Chaverria, 71 years old, passed away to be in the arms of our Lord Jesus Savior on December 9, 2025, in Burley. He was the son of Gregoria and Felipe Guevara, hailing from his beloved San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Chabelo was the only adventurous sibling among ten who chose to come to Idaho at just 15 years old, working at Thain Farms for many years. He frequently traveled back and forth to the U.S. from Mexico, and at 25, he married his cherished wife, Juanita.
Throughout his life, he continued working in the fields of Minidoka and spent a short time in Jerome. Eventually, he began part-time work at Amalgamated Sugar Company, transitioning to full-time for about 40 years before his retirement. Retirement for Chabelo meant tending to his summer garden and escaping to Mexico for the winter to avoid the cold weather.
In the warm summer evenings, you could find him riding his bike, a pastime he truly loved. Family and friends always eagerly anticipated the bountiful produce from his garden, which included zucchini, sweet juicy tomatoes, and oversized peaches—his gardening skills were remarkable!
Chabelo was an active member of St. Nicholas Church for many years, contributing to the Guadalupana Society and enjoying the camaraderie of making tamales. You’d often see him ushering during Mass.
His humor and wit will be dearly missed. We will always remember his quirky phrase “Tantiadas,” which he used to express thoughts like “That’s nonsense” or “That’s crazy.” We even joked about patenting it!
Chabelo is survived by his wife, Juanita, and his children, Yesenia (Floyd) Padilla and Ruben (Mari) Guevara. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Socorro Guevara, Cirilo Guevara, Franco Guevara, and his son Jose Isabel Jr. Guevara.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 12, from 6-8 p.m. for a viewing at Hansen Mortuary in Rupert, followed by a Rosary at 9:15 a.m. and Holy Mass at St. Nicholas Church in Rupert at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, which will be preceded by burial at Gem Memorial Gardens in Burley, Idaho. Arrangements are under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
