Edythe Sexton Obituary

Edythe Lucille Sexton 16 July 1914- 28 May 2024

Edythe ended her earthly journey and ascended the golden stairway to meet her maker and savior on 28 May 2024. Born on 16 July 1914 to Floyd Calvin Foster and Sarah Margaret (Long) Foster in a farm house just outside of Walnut, Kansas, she was the eldest of three daughters who were raised in a single parent home. According to the colorful childhood stories Edythe told later in life her mother was quite busy putting up with Edythe’s antics. In the fall after her high school graduation Edythe started teaching school in a one room schoolhouse. Times were hard during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl disasters, but her mother was able to pay for Edythe to attend teacher’s college during the summers and earn her Teacher’s Certificate. She taught in rural schools for 10 years. During one of the school house community dances she met Francis Sexton, and they were married in August 1941. It wasn’t long until Francis was drafted into the Army and assigned to Fort Riley. Edythe followed and got a job as assistant station manager at the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad depot in Junction City. After Francis was discharged, they moved to Independence, Kansas where Francis became a mechanic at the Ford dealer and Edythe became a housewife.  In May of 1947 Edythe added a job title of mother when their son Edwin was born. In 1959 the family loaded all their possessions in a truck and moved to Idaho with the hopes of going into farming, but that was not to be. Edythe once again took up teaching, but this time it was in a brand-new building at Pershing Elementary in Rupert. She attained her BS in Elementary Education at ISU, and continued to teach in the same classroom until retirement. The couple enjoyed many road and fishing trips along with their involvement in church activities. Edythe was preceded in death by Francis, her two sisters, and just about everyone else because she was 109 years old. She is survived by her son Edwin (Barbara), grandson Bryan (Susan), great granddaughter Brynn, and numerous nieces and nephews. Many thanks to Visions Hospice and Autumn Haven Assisted Living for the care they provided during the last five years of Edythe’s journey. Per Edythe’s request there are no services. Rememberances may be made in Edythe’s name to the DeMary Memorial Library, Rupert, ID, to honor her love of reading and dedication to education. Arrangements under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
