Emma Elvina Hoff Miller, 86, of Burley, Id. passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Emma was born Emma Elvina Hoff on June 1, 1937, in Linton, N.D., to Adam and Freda Hoff, and grew up in Tappen, N.D. which she always referred to as Home. She also lived in Othello, WA, Twin Falls, ID, and Paul, ID before settling in Burley, ID where she raised her family and built her new Home.
In High School, Emma played on the basketball team and was involved in a variety of clubs and sports. Upon receiving her diploma, Emma and her sisters opened a small restaurant they named ‘The Ritz’ in Tappen, which quickly became the most popular hangout for local teens and families, as well as travelers on their way through N.D.
She moved to Idaho with her younger sister Irene and met and married the love of her life Gary Miller.
She and Gary moved to Othello, WA where they started their family with the birth of their first child, Mark. Shortly after they moved back to the Mini-Cassia areas where they continued to enlarge their family and purchased a home in Burley, where they raised their children and spent the rest of their lives together.
Emma was a known as a hard worker and raised a very productive garden and many fruit trees, which fed her family, friends, and neighbors for many decades. She was also well known for her many ‘care packages’ which included mail and newspaper clippings from home, as well as a variety of candy and gum, and most notably the many jars of homemade jams and jellies she made from the contents of her garden and fruit trees.
She also started a cleaning business later in life, where she focused on helping people who could no longer clean for themselves.
Emma was fiercely loyal to her family and close friends. She was very loving, good natured and friendly to everyone she interacted with. Her family will never be the same without her generosity and deep love. They feel blessed to have had her in their lives, and although she will be greatly missed, she will forever be in the hearts and minds of her family, friends and those who were close to her.
Emma is survived by her Sons Mark L. Miller of Castro Valley, CA.; Dana S. Miller (Marlene) of Davenport, IA.; Evan W. Miller (Teresa) of Burley, ID.; Russell J. Miller (Maureen) of Phoenix, AZ.; and Eric A. Miller (Phil) of Olympia, WA, Brother Arnold Hoff of Fargo, N.D., Sisters Phyllis Kramlich of Medina, N.D. and Ruby Wall of Bismarck, N.D., and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She had lived a long and productive life, and has now joined her husband Gary, daughter Shelly Barbara, and her many siblings and parents who preceded her.
Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2023 at Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley. Arrangements are under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
