Lana Jeanne Cherry Stimpson
May 10, 1945 – October 25, 2024
Lana Jeanne Cherry Stimpson, a woman of unwavering faith and love, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 25, 2024, at her home in St. George, Utah. Born on May 10, 1945, in Rupert, Idaho, Lana was raised by her mother, Forrest Fairchild McCardell, and Jack Cleon McCardell, alongside her brother, Steven. From her early years, she showed a love for life and a spirit of service that guided everything she did.
She met the love of her life, Leslie Robert Stimpson, when they were just kids growing up in Heyburn, Idaho. She was the first one to welcome him as the “new kid on the block,” and that was the start of something beautiful. They were sealed for eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 28, 1966, and for 58 years they built a life filled with love, laughter, and a whole lot of faith. Together, they raised eight amazing children: Sheri (Larry) Hansen, Mark (Kathie) Stimpson, James (Richelle) Stimpson, Dan (Melanie) Stimpson, Wendy (Aaron) Murdock, Jared Stimpson, Sarah (Shawn) Birch, and Kody (Lisa) Stimpson. Her legacy grew with 33 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored.
Lana’s life was one of tireless devotion, balancing a career as a registered nurse with her role as a mother. She graduated from Ricks College and went on to serve in the LDS hospitals in Salt Lake City and Idaho Falls, and at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. A hard worker, she often took on two or three shifts at a time, but she never wavered in her dedication to her family. Her legacy of strength, honesty, and selflessness lives on in the lives of those she loved and nurtured.
In addition to her nursing career, Lana served faithfully in various callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From playing the organ to serving in the Young Women’s and Relief Society programs, she touched many lives with her quiet example of service and faith. Her love for learning extended beyond the gospel—she taught herself to play the piano as a child and had a passion for history, particularly her Irish heritage, which she proudly celebrated on St. Patrick’s Day.
Some of her happiest memories were family reunions in the mountains at West Piney, with as many as 50 or 60 loved ones gathered together. Even as health challenges set in, particularly with her feet, she remained a rock for her family. She loved staying in touch, whether it was through phone calls, conversations, or playful texts with her children and grandchildren. They all knew she had a wicked sense of humor and a big heart.
Her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ carried her through life. She believed deeply in the power of eternal families and held onto that hope, especially during the tough times. Through all of life’s ups and downs, she remained a woman of faith, living the principles of the gospel and dedicating herself to her family and her Savior.
We will celebrate Lana’s life with a viewing on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, in St. George, Utah, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home of Southern Utah. Another viewing will be held Saturday, before the funeral, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Hansen Mortuary in Rupert, Idaho. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m., with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Heyburn, Idaho.
Lana lived a life full of love, service, and faith that will never be forgotten. We know she’s now reunited with her parents and brother and others who’ve gone before her, and while we’ll miss her deeply, we hold tight to the promise that we’ll be together again. #FamiliesAreForever
