Vernell Cowell

Vernell Cowell, 89, of Rupert, Idaho, passed away at her home on December 10, 2024.

Vernell was born in Rupert on August 22, 1935, to Ernie and Wilna Maricle. She loved growing up on a farm and graduated from Rupert H.S. in 1953. After graduation, she went to Santa Barbara, California to further her education. She became a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) and returned to Rupert to work full time for Dr. Moellmer. She met Dan Cowell in May of 1955, and they were married on November 18,1955.

Vernell and Dan had two sons. Bill (Dale) of Rogue River, Oregon and Pat (Kim) of Liberty Lake Washington. Vernell loved being a grandma and great grandma (GG). She had five grandsons. Matt, Billy, Mike, Jake, and Eric. She also has four great grandchildren. Owen, Berklee, Greyson, and Atticus and a sister Rheta Kay Litman. She loved sports and supporting her sons and grandsons in their athletic endeavors.

The community of Rupert was very important to Vernell. She was an active member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church and Guild, PEO, and loved supporting community events. Rupert was her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dan, parents, Wilna and Ernie Maricle, brother Nile Maricle, and grandson Eric Cowell.

We would like to thank Dr. Nicole Shumway and Mom’s care givers, Christie Gomez, and Tanisha Andrews. They provided loving and compassionate care to Mom over the last year.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, December 16, at Saint Matthews Episcopal Church in Rupert, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, donations may be send to Saint Matthew’s Episcopal Church, PO BOX 324, Rupert, Idaho, 83350. Arrangements are under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
