RUPERT – Larry Jason “Shep” Shepherd, age 47, of Rupert, Idaho, passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
He was born on April 5, 1979, to Larry and Cricket shepherd, Jason was known to family and friends as “Shep.” He graduated from Minico High School in 1998 and soon began a life of service to his country. In August of 1998, Jason joined the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served for ten years until August 2008. During his military career, he received numerous accommodations and served on multiple overseas deployments.
In November 2001, Jason married Melissa Garrard. To this union came two sons, Austyn, born April 30, 2003, and Elliott, born October 26, 2004. His boys were an important part of his life and will carry his memory forward.
Jason was also known for the things he enjoyed outside of his service and family. He loved watching his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed spending time on the golf course. Those who knew him will remember the moments, laughter, and memories they shared with him.
Jason is survived by his two sons, Austyn and Elliott Shepherd; as well as his older brother, Duff (Petra) Wagnon; and nephew, Brody Wagnon; along with other family members and friends who loved him.
Jason’s passing leaves a space that can never be filled, but his life, his service, and the memories he created will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Rest in peace, Jason. You will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. Semper Fi.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Hansen Mortuary, located at 710 6th Street, in Rupert. Urn placement will follow at Rupert Cemetery, located at 450 N. Meridian in Rupert, where military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Group.
