RUPERT – Mont Alan Swenson, age 86, of Rupert, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026, at his home in Rupert.
Alan was born February 6, 1940, in Malad, Idaho, to Mont August and Billie Edra (Evans) Swenson. When Alan was seven years old, the family welcomed twin boys, William and Robert, referred to as Bill and Bob. Alan’s mother, Billie, died shortly after the twins’ birth, and Alan, Bill, and Bob were jointly cared for by their father and grandmothers, and later by their stepmother, Zilla Elcock Swenson.
Alan loved growing up in Malad and enjoyed telling detailed stories about his childhood and growing-up years until his last days. After graduating from Malad High School in 1958, Alan attended the University of Idaho, where he received a degree in electrical engineering. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserve, and while waiting to attend officer training camp, he returned to Malad and worked at a gas station. It was there that he was instantly smitten when a young woman in hair rollers drove by in a blue Chevrolet. Alan discovered the woman’s name—Sheila Ann Colton—and finagled a meeting and, eventually, an engagement. Alan and Sheila were married on March 22, 1963, and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on July 7, 1964.
As the Swenson's moved around the country for Alan’s training and later his career, they added to their family. Michael arrived first in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by Michelle in Chickasha, Oklahoma; Jennifer in Allentown, Pennsylvania; and Jeffrey and Greg in Twin Falls, Idaho.
In 1979, Alan was hired by the Amalgamated Sugar Company, and the Swenson family moved to Rupert. Alan eventually became superintendent of the Paul sugar factory. Alan and Sheila spent the next 31 years together there, raising their family, working and serving in their community and church, and spending time with friends and family.
Alan was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served, among other callings, as a bishop, in the stake presidency, and in the singles ward. In each calling, he made lasting impressions and created lifelong relationships.
After 47 years together, Sheila passed away in March 2010. Alan married Annette Jones Kent in October 2010. Alan and Annette were caring and committed companions, and they enjoyed having so many children and grandchildren to jointly love. They served a mission together in Alpena, Michigan, then retired back to Rupert, where they spent their time gardening, reading, doing puzzles, traveling, and loving their families.
Alan has been reunited in death with his parents, Mont and Billie Swenson; his brother, Bob Swenson; his wife, Sheila; and his son, Michael Swenson. He is survived by his wife, Annette Swenson; his daughter-in-law, Ingrid Swenson; his two daughters, Ann Michelle (Scott) Rasmussen and Jennifer (Mike) Tilley; his sons, Jeff (Shalene) Swenson and Greg (Ashlee) Swenson; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his stepchildren; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren in the Kent family, whom he deeply loved.
We are grateful for the legacy of love, knowledge, faith, and family Alan has left behind.
The funeral will be held at 11a.m. Monday, September 21, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Rupert 7th Ward, located at 324 East 18th Street, in Rupert, with Bishop Boyd Bingham officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the Rupert Cemetery, where military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Group.
