Forrest E McCarty Jr. was born June 1, 1927, in Kansas. At the age of 6 his family moved to Idaho because of the dust in 1945 WW2 was ending and he was drafted into the army where he served two years.

When he got out of the army there was no work, so dad enlisted in the navy where he spent 4 years. Dad served on The Haven hospital ship and also served on a reclaimer ship during the Korean war. Dad didn't talk much about being in the war but he would speak of his time in Korea and Japan. He always said he liked the now because he had a clean bed at night.
