Jun. 19, 1934 - Mar. 21, 2017
Date of Service: Mar. 25, 2017
James "Jim" Joseph Henscheid was born Tuesday, June 19, 1934 to Carl and Dorothy Henscheid. He left us Tuesday March 21, 2017 at the age of 82.
Jim grew up in Rupert, Idaho and was the eldest child of 14. He graduated from Rupert High School and later joined the Navy.
On leave from the Navy, Jim went to a church dance in Rupert where he met the love of his life Carol Grayot. After that night Carol said "I am done looking, he is the one." Jim went back to serve in the military and Carol moved to Salmon with her family. The two wrote to each other every week for 3 ½ years.
During his time in the military Jim was stationed in Alaska, the Philippines and Hawaii among a few. Hawaii was his favorite. While in Hawaii he got a love of steel guitars, Hawaiian music, Choke Cherry wine, and Orchids. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Jim courted Carol another two years. Jim would make the 600 mile roundtrip from Rupert to Salmon every two months to visit Carol. They finally married June 10th 1961. From this union came eleven children, Susan (Mark) Fowler, Peter (Ida), Jenny (Tim) Ferguson, Margaret (Tom) Ausburn, Ted (Elaina), Greg (Serena), Don (Amanda), Mark (Alysia), Joann, Jeff (Ann), and Cindy (Shane) Jay.
While in the military Jim learned carpentry skills and he took those skills to help build many houses and apartment buildings in the Magic Valley. One of the houses included the home his family would grow up in. Jim also started his own small engine and saw sharpening service called, Jims Saw Service.
Jim was very active in the Catholic Church. He joined the Knights of Columbus at the age of 18 in 1952. By 1959 Jim was the youngest 4th degree Knight in Idaho. He enjoyed traveling with the Knights of Columbus and participating in ceremonies. Many years later Jim became the custodian at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church and School.
Jim enjoyed photography and developing the photos in the basement at home. He liked to collect odd pencils. Jim loved to go square dancing; often bringing his children to join in the fun, camping with the entire family was always something we all looked forward to. As the years went on Jim spent time at the Senior Center enjoying spending time with his friends. One true love he had was for his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years Carol Henscheid, 11 children and spouses, his wives brother and wife, 31 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren on the way, and one great-great grandchild, 13 brothers and sisters and their spouses. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brothers in law Dan Kubik and Paul Maloney, one precious grandchild Joshua Henscheid, and various others.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church of Rupert. A luncheon will be served at the Senior Center after the services. A viewing will be held on Friday March 24, 2017 from 6-8:00 p.m. with the Rosary beginning at 7:00p.m. at the church. Funeral Services are under the directions of Hansen Mortuary.
