Obituary for Dora W. Heward
Dora Wrigley Heward was born to loving parents, Alexander and Olive Rebecca Bingham Wrigley. They were past the normal child-bearing years, so it was quite a surprise when this little girl was born into their family. She was born the day before Christmas, December 24, 1924. All of her siblings were delighted to have a baby sister. Dora often thought that her name should have been Joy or Merry or something to do with Christmas, but her father said, "No, she is to be named Dora."
Dora grew up in the View area of Burley, Idaho. She was the youngest of six children, Olive Myrl (Oscar) Burgess, LeVirl, who died as a young child, Wilford (Verla Banner) , Raymond (Louise Brown) , Bernell (Eva Stanger). They were always so good to Dora. They made a great impression on her life.
One of Dora's fondest memories is of her family sitting on the front porch at dusk and singing songs. Her father was especially good at singing songs that made them happy and feeling good about being together. There was often dances held at the Church, and they all attended. Dora's brothers taught her to dance by letting her stand on their feet.
Dora was always taken to Church, and later in her teen years she was given many opportunities to serve in different callings, such as teaching Primary and leading the music in many of the organizations. She remained active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life and served in numerous callings in the Relief Society, Sunday School, and Young Women Improvement Organization in both the ward and stake.
Dora attended Albion State Normal with the intention of being an elementary school teacher. She did teach school in Rockland, Idaho for one year. Then other things occurred that changed the direction of her life. She married Gerald Bowen Heward in the Salt Lake Temple on December 28, 1944, after his courting her for three and a half years. To their union was born ten children: Rebecca (John) Mangan, Ida Lou (Jonny) Nay, Lynn (Carla Meredith), Gwen (Greg) Brower, Del Ray (Caleen Crane), William (Sherrie Baker), Alan (Melody Futrell), Kristin (Dave) Spence, Lorn (Danette Hodge), Janine (Spencer) Wilson.
During her later life she was active in the Burley Music Club and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She always loved her association with those ladies.
Dora was a huge influence in the lives of her children and her grandchildren. Dora was preceded in death by all of her siblings, her parents, her husband, a daughter-in-law, and grandson and many of her nieces and nephews. She leaves posterity of ten children, 58 grandchildren, 164 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
